KATHLEEN AND ROD in COSTA RICA

For Kathleen and Rod, Costa Rica became the backdrop for two celebrations at once. The trip began in San Jose, cheering on their daughter's UC San Diego soccer team. Then the celebration turned to their own: thirty years of marriage, marked by rainforest, volcano, and coastline.

From San Jose, the journey moved into Arenal, where a private hike wound down five hundred steps to a hidden waterfall, and the volcano's thermal springs offered the kind of quiet only steam and stone can hold. The final chapter unfolded in Uvita, at a hilltop hideaway overlooking the Whale's Tail sandbar, where humpbacks migrate just offshore, and the ocean is visible from nearly every corner of the suite, thirty years in, and still finding new ways to be surprised by each other.
